From what I've read it looks like a good idea to setup a bare bones serial electric free download without the essentials windows server 2012 essentials hypervisor free, install Hyper-V Role and add a full Essentials as a VM.

It's a Hypervisor only. Whereas Server R2, "core" or "gui" install, allows you to install other roles - it's the same product, one just doesn't have the GUI if you opt to install it that way.

You don't need separate data volumes for within the VM. You create the virtual disks as part of the configuration of the VM. I'll be going to RAID I read up on the performance. Just took the order. He could have offered advice which I would have been very much appreciated. It's been 7 years since I did this, so was working of previous configs. Trying to get my head around NIC Teaming. Going blind spending hours on the internet looking for info on each step of my install. I presently have two configured as Virtual switches which I team within the VM. Still have to figure out the best config. So I teamed all 4 NICs on my servers, then create one virtual switch for each.
So if any one, or even twophysical server goes down I can still bring up all VMs, and load balance across still running physical servers.
